A
coal mining company town at the beginning of the 20th century,
and ghost town in the 1960's, Madrid (pronounced MAD-rid) re-emerged
in the 1970's and is now home to more artists per capita than
any other town in the country. With only some 400 residents,
Madrid's Main Street thrives with unique artisan shops, galleries
and eateries created in turn-of-the-century homes.
The historic ballpark,
located at the north end of town, hosts concerts and ball games
throughout the summer. During the Christmas
holiday season, Madrid is famous for its awe-inspiring Christmas lights and decorations
and has earned itself the title "New Mexico's Christmas Town".
Madrid
has recently gained notoriety for it's prominent part in the
Disney film Wild Hogs starring John Travolta, Martin Lawrence,
William Macy, Tim Allen and Morrissa Tomei.
